What happens when you meditate?

The word 'transcend' means to go beyond. In Transcendental Meditation, the mind naturally settles down to quieter levels of thinking and goes beyond even the finest impulse of thought to experience the most silent and peaceful state of pure consciousness- your own simplest state of awareness.

This process of the mind effortlessly settling within is called transcending and is unique to Transcendental Meditation.

During transcending, the body gains profound rest. Research shows this rest is deeper than sleep. This profound rest releases accumulated stress and reactivates the body’s inner healing intelligence, so that we can heal ourselves from the inside.

The result is clearer, calmer thinking, more energy, less stress and better health. Not surprisingly, this leads to more success, happiness and fulfilment in life.

The introductory video on this page provides a clear description of what happens during Transcendental Meditation.

What if I’m not good at controlling my mind?

The good news is that even though Transcendental Meditation has been shown to improve concentration and focus in activity, there is no concentration, focus or control of the mind when practising the technique.
TM is a completely natural and effortless technique. Anyone, at any age, including children can do it. It’s that simple!

What if I’m skeptical?

Being sceptical is fine. Fortunately, Transcendental Meditation is a universal technique and no belief or change in beliefs is required to learn and practice TM – and gain all the benefits. In fact, you can be 100% sceptical and the TM technique will work just fine for you.

Can I learn TM from a book or video?

The Transcendental Meditation technique is unique. It’s natural and effortless yet requires personal instruction to learn.

A highly trained, certified and experienced teacher provides ‘one on one’ instruction at each step of learning the technique. This personal attention ensures correct practise and verification so that you can grow in confidence that you are proceeding correctly.

Transcendental Meditation is the complete art and science of consciousness which can only be imparted by a trained and experienced teacher.

There is no other way to learn the authentic TM technique — and there is no evidence that any other form of self-development provides the full range of benefits documented in the published research on Transcendental Meditation.

What is the value of Transcendental Meditation in daily life?

Whether you are looking specifically for stress management, better health or just a little more calm, the benefits of Transcendental Meditation start from the first day, and produce a cumulative effect over time.

TM has been shown to be uniquely effective in enlivening brain function and reducing stress related illness. It is the only meditation recognised by the American Heart Association and the Australian CSIRO to actually lower blood pressure.

5 decades of extensive peer-reviewed research have proven benefits of Transcendental Meditation in all areas of life, including:

  • Greater Inner Calm throughout the day
  • Reduced Cortisol (the “stress hormone”)
  • Normalized Blood Pressure
  • Reduced Insomnia
  • Lower Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke by 48%
  • Reduced Anxiety and Depression
  • Improved Vitality, Dynamism and Effectiveness
  • Improved Brain Function, Memory and Intelligence
  • Younger Biological Age
  • Reduced Alcohol, Cigarette and Illicit Drug use
  • Clearer thinking, increased intelligence and more creativity
  • Improved health, energy and happiness
  • Better relationships at work and at home

    to a more peaceful world
