It’s natural to be healthy, however, unfortunately with our fast paced lifestyles stress is a daily reality. Stress affects us in different ways and has been to shown to be the root cause of imbalance and disease in the body.
Some people may find that their sleep is disturbed when under pressure, some become anxious, others depressed. Others may suffer from digestive disorders, headaches, high blood pressure or asthma. Some may resort to alcohol or cigarettes to try to find relief from stress. Research shows that Transcendental Meditation provides the physiology with profound rest. Rest is the antidote to stress. Rest eliminates the root cause of disease and imbalance and reactivates the body’s natural healing ability.
As a result, stress-related imbalances and behaviours have been scientifically shown to improve with regular practice of Transcendental Meditation.
This long term study from the US compared medical insurance data of more than 2,000 TM practitioners, over a 5year period, to the averages of 600,000 other Americans. The TM group up to age of 40 years, had 50% less hospitalisations in comparison to the other insured persons. Transcendental Meditation reduces all the known risk factors for heart disease and stroke including stress, high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, abnormal blood fats, and insulin resistance (which can lead to diabetes).
A meta-analysis is a method of combining the results of many independent research studies in order to most rigorously assess the effects of different treatments. The above chart shows the results of a meta-analysis of 107 published studies on stress reduction and blood pressure. Only Transcendental Meditation had a statistically significant impact on reducing high blood pressure among hypertensive subjects.

Heart disease and stroke are reduced with the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation. The thickened lining of the arteries (atherosclerosis) that leads to heart attacks and strokes has been shown to reduce within 6 – 12 months of TM practice - without any change to diet or lifestyle.
Recent studies have shown that people with heart disease who practise Transcendental Meditation have 48% less heart attacks, strokes and deaths.
